Saving Lives & Property with Commitment & Excellence

Citizen's Fire Academy

Today’s firefighters respond to more emergencies than ever before, with one foot in the tradition of helping people just like you, and one foot preparing for the demands of future responses.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be the one in the fire truck, responding to a building on fire or assist with life saving emergency medical services, possibly saving someone’s life?

Here is your chance to get a glimpse into the life of a firefighter, learn about how your fire department works hard everyday to be prepared to respond, and gain valuable safety knowledge and safety tips to use in your own life to protect you and your family. All of this can be achieved by attending the Leander Fire Department Citizen’s Fire Academy.

Class content includes:

  • Organization, History, Life in the Station
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
  • Fire Apparatus, Hose Handling
  • Fire Prevention, Home and Business Inspection
  • First Aid, AED
  • Graduation

The Department’s intention is not to make citizen firefighters or to prepare these individuals for a career in the fire service. The intent is to educate interested persons as to the how, what, and why of today’s fire service.

Academy classes are taught by City of Leander Fire Department members. Participants will have the opportunity to meet with the Fire Chief and other department members.

Participants are encouraged to ask questions and to express any concerns to the Fire Department Officials.

Potential candidates for the Citizen’s Fire Academy must meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum age of 18 years
  • Live or work in the Leander Fire Department response area
  • No prior felony arrests
  • No misdemeanor arrests within five years of application

For more information about the Citizen’s Fire Academy, please contact Lieutenant Eddie Baily (512) 528-2856. Should you not receive an answer, please don’t hesitate to leave a message and a department member will contact you as soon as possible.
