Fire Inspections & Pre-Plans

The inspections that LFD conducts can be broadly grouped into four categories: New Construction, General Business, Residential, and Public Assembly.

New Construction

Inspections of new construction are provided for all structures built within the Leander Fire Department's response district. These buildings must pass inspection prior to occupancy. New Construction inspections range from a visual check of sprinkler and alarm systems to an observed discharge of a special extinguishing system. New Construction inspections are conducted by LFD staff inspectors, who have been trained and certified in this specialty.

General Business

There are a number of occupancies within the City of Leander that receive regular fire and life-safety inspections. Examples include day cares, health care facilities, and institutional occupancies. Inspections also ensure that all fire protection systems within structures (sprinklers, alarms, elevators, etc.) in the City receive an annual inspection by an independent third-party contractor (this is a state requirement enforced by local municipalities). Any business within the City is subject to a periodic fire and life safety inspection by inspectors with the LFD.

Residential (Multi-Family, and Single-Family)
Multi-family Living

The LFD inspects all multi-family residential occupancies within the City. Due to the unique risks posed by multi-family residential structures, LFD has made them a priority for regular fire and life safety inspections.

Single-family Living

The Uniform Fire Code (under which LFD operates) does not give direct authority to the fire department to conduct fire and life safety inspections on single-family homes or duplexes. However, should you wish, LFD inspectors can assist you with your own non-binding "Home Hazard Assessment", please do not hesitate to contact Lt. Davis.

Public Assembly

The phrase Public Assembly refers to any structure or occupancy that is designed for 50 or more people to meet for entertainment, worship, dining or amusement. LFD currently maintains annual inspections on such facilities.
