The Leander Fire Department consists of both paid and volunteer personnel that together staff a fire station 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Volunteers that live in district also respond to all major calls when they are available. These calls include fires, emergency medical, hazardous material, rescue, and others.
At the present time, the Leander Fire Department is responding to an ever increasing number of requests for service. The volunteers are an active and vital part of this response. Being a volunteer firefighter is an excellent opportunity to help provide important community services. The work can be both rewarding and challenging.
There are currently two volunteer programs that you can apply for:
In-District (Active) Volunteer Firefighter:
Members that live in or near (2.5 miles) the Leander FD service area. In-district members are required to staff fire stations as well as respond to calls from home in the event of a major incident.Out-of-District (Reserve) Volunteer Firefighter:
Members that live outside the Leander FD service area but still live inside the Austin metropolitan area. Out-of-District members perform all of the same functions as In-district members EXCEPT that they are not required to respond to calls from home.Membership Requirements:
- Attend at least 75% of company training drills. Weekly training drills are held on Monday Nights, from 7 to 10 PM.
- Work at least three shifts per month on duty at your assigned fire station.
- In-District Volunteers are expected to respond to stations when called for if available in district.
- Volunteer firefighters in Leander work hand-in-hand with career staff. Our goal is to build a fire department that is nationally recognized as a standard for how to operate a successful combination volunteer/career department. As such, we are building our volunteer firefighter program in Leander, not replacing it with career staff. When you walk inside a Leander Fire Station, you cannot pick out our volunteer from our paid staff. We wear the same uniforms, we do the same station chores, we clean and maintain the same trucks, we train together, and we work seamlessly as a team. If this is what you are looking for in a volunteer fire department, we want you to join our team.
