Fire Suppression
The City of Leander Fire Department provides fire suppression utilizing personnel who staff two fire stations located within the City limits.
Minimum staffing of career firefighters is 7 per day, and often times as many as 13 firefighters are on duty (some being volunteer firefighters). Central Fire Station responds first due to emergencies in the northern portions of the City, including Benbrook Ranch, Westwood, Leander Heights, and Vista Ridge. Fire Station Two protects the southern portion of the City, including Crystal Falls, Horizon Park, Hernandos Hideaway, and County Glen. Both stations are staffed with firefighters 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to provide rapid response. Although these firefighters are also EMS certified and respond to medical assistance calls when available, the core function is always to mitigate fire emergencies in buildings and houses. Fires grow exponentially in just a few minutes, and many fires can be deadly if not immediately dealt with.
The Leander Fire Department operates several large state of the art fire apparatus, including some in reserve. Also, many smaller support or utility vehicles are kept at the ready. On duty firefighters meticulously check and re-check the preparedness of equipment that is sometimes used only a handful of times a year. Leander firefighters also train every shift on some function of their job. Department wide training is held weekly. Within the Leander Fire Department response area, several structure fires a happen each year. Most are very minor and, although a burden on the citizen whose property has burned, do not require the resources of the entire department. As Leander continues to grow, many large commercial and muli-occupant facilities are being constructed. Leander firefighters are trained to handle apartment firefighting as well as fires that occur in large 'tilt-wall' commercial buildings.
